World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day’s agenda is to:

Give a human face to environmental issues;

Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;

Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;

Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

World Environment Day website

In a nutshell, uShare is about saving money, not making money. It’s about sharing within communities where you live, where you work or with whom you share a leisure interest. It’s about being environmentally friendly, making the best use of our available resources and it’s about reducing the distance you have to travel to get the things you need.

We’ve deliberately tried to make uShare very simple to use. For every item you lend you get 2 points per day, for every item you borrow, it costs you a point per day.

Many of the items that you use infrequently often come at significant expense, either to buy or hire. Search on the site to see if someone who lives locally has that item and you could borrow it for a point per day.

The service is free so we can encourage many people up and down the country to start sharing items to save money and also help reduce their carbon footprint.

We want you as members to feel safe using uShare and take the security of your possessions very seriously. We have introduced a feedback mechanism so uShare will be self policing, providing you with the ability to view a borrower’s history before deciding whether to lend any item.

The real works starts now as we live with uShare and start enhancing it to make the service to you even better. As a result I’d like to leave you with a request. Start sharing and send us your feedback on how you’ve found the uShare experience.
